  1. What a terrific shadow shot! Such gorgeous colors! And, no, they don't have to be dark!! This one is a perfect example!

    Enjoy!

  4. Oh my gosh! The colours in this photo are amazing! That is so very beautiful, and I'd be framing that one for sure! Bliss! You are so right in saying that shadows don't need to be dark. I forget that sometimes!

  8. Diahn, this is a great example of chroma blinding us to value! It's something I constantly point out to myself and my students. The chroma can be bright enough to fool us into thinking it's a light color, when in fact it's quite a bit darker than we think. Yellow and orange are famous for fooling me, though blue can do it, too--often in the other direction. Blue masquerades as darker than I think.

Take your photo into grayscale (a less than perfect means of determining value, but one I use rather frequently) and see how dark the shadows are and how light the sky is. I was blown away! In looking at the photo I'd have said the blue was darker than the shadowy leaves, but it really isn't. That also fits the theory that the blue of the sky is lighter than we think.

May I save this one and share it with my landscape students? (With credit to you, of course!)

    Gorgeous shot, BTW. :)
