Getting Closer

J in Pencil and China Marker, originally uploaded by diahn.

This little guy escapes me. I just can't quite get his eyes, no matter how hard I try and the eyes are really the key, aren't they? I will keep trying - I've got him around for another 12 years or so, now don't I? Nothing like a captive model...

  1. It looks great to me, Diahn, but I know how hard it is too capture those close to us. Maybe we know them too well to draw them?

  2. It looks great to me also.
Do you work from a photo or does your son sit still for you?
I find if I work from a photo and turn it upside down I can get it better.

  3. You've got his just-about-to-smile look very well. He is SO cute! But then, he would be, wouldn't he ;D.

It's a terrific sketch and boy does it brings back memories! I have many a sketch of my son done during his hockey practices and sleeping in the family room! Enjoy, they grow up fast.

  5. Wonderful sketch! I knew exactly who it was ... it's super hard to draw your own kids, though. What you think / feel / know / love really does interfere with what you see...

  6. I agree there is something about drawing a loved one. I have tons of trouble with it also.

On the other hand, it looks fabulous from my viewpoint!

  7. I have always had the same dilema when doingmy kids. Maybe because we know them so well that it is almost impossible to capture just one facet of them. I recognized the boy right away from all the photos we've seen. I think this is superb!
